1
וחויאו לדוד למימר הא פלשתאי מגיחין קרבא בקעילה והא אינון בזזין ית אידריא:
aydrya yth bzzyn aynwn wha bqeylh qrba mgykhyn plshthay ha lmymr ldwd wkhwyaw
David was told, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and are robbing the threshing floors.”

ושאיל דוד במימרא דיי למימר האזיל ואקטול בפלשתאי האלין ואמר יי לדוד אזיל ותקטול בפלשתאי ותפרוק ית יתבי קעילה:
qeylh ythby yth wthprwq bplshthay wthqTwl azyl ldwd yy wamr halyn bplshthay waqTwl hazyl lmymr dyy bmymra dwd wshayl
Therefore David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go and strike these Philistines?” Yahweh said to David, “Go strike the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

ואמרו גברי דוד ליה הא כד אנחנא הכא בארעא דבית יהודה אנחנא דחלין ואף אלהין דניזל לקעילה לסדרי פלשתאי:
plshthay lsdry lqeylh dnyzl alhyn wap dkhlyn ankhna yhwdh dbyth barea hka ankhna kd ha lyh dwd gbry wamrw
David’s men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”

ואוסיף עוד דוד למשאל במימרא דיי וקביל צלותיה יי ואמר קום חות לקעילה ארי אנא מסר ית פלשתאי בידך:
bydk plshthay yth msr ana ary lqeylh khwth qwm wamr yy tslwthyh wqbyl dyy bmymra lmshal dwd ewd wawsyp
Then David inquired of Yahweh yet again. Yahweh answered him, and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

ואזל דוד וגברוהי לקעילה ואגיח קרבא בפלשתאי ודבר ית גיתיהון ומחא בהון מחא סגיאה ופרק דוד ית יתבי קעילה:
qeylh ythby yth dwd wprq sgyah mkha bhwn wmkha gythyhwn yth wdbr bplshthay qrba wagykh lqeylh wgbrwhy dwd wazl
David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their livestock, and killed them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

והוה כד ערק אביתר בר אחימלך לות דוד לקעילה אפודא אחית בידיה:
bydyh akhyth apwda lqeylh dwd lwth akhymlk br abythr erq kd whwh
When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand.

ואתחוא לשאול ארי אתא דוד לקעילה ואמר שאול מסר יתיה יי בידי ארי אתמסר למיעל בקרתא דלה דשין ועברין:
webryn dshyn dlh bqrtha lmyel athmsr ary bydy yy ythyh msr shawl wamr lqeylh dwd atha ary lshawl wathkhwa
Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.”

וכנש שאול ית כל עמא לאגחא קרבא למיחת לקעילה למצר על דוד ועל גברוהי:
gbrwhy wel dwd el lmtsr lqeylh lmykhth qrba lagkha ema kl yth shawl wknsh
Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.

וידע דוד ארי עלוהי שאול כמין בישתא ואמר לאביתר כהנא קריב אפודא:
apwda qryb khna labythr wamr byshtha kmyn shawl elwhy ary dwd wyde
David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him. He said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.”

ואמר דוד יי אלהא דישראל משמע שמע עבדך ארי בעי שאול למיעל לקעילה לחבלא לקרתא בדילי:
bdyly lqrtha lkhbla lqeylh lmyel shawl bey ary ebdk shme mshme dyshral alha yy dwd wamr
Then David said, “O Yahweh, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah to destroy the city for my sake.

הסבירין לממסרי יתבי קעילה בידיה הסביר למיחת שאול כמא דשמע עבדך יי אלהא דישראל חוי כען לעבדך ואמר יי סבר למיחת:
lmykhth sbr yy wamr lebdk ken khwy dyshral alha yy ebdk dshme kma shawl lmykhth hsbyr bydyh qeylh ythby lmmsry hsbyryn
Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Yahweh, the God of Israel, I beg you, tell your servant.” Yahweh said, “He will come down.”

ואמר דוד הסבירין לממסרי יתבי קעילה יתי וית גברי בידא דשאול ואמר יי סבירין לממסר:
lmmsr sbyryn yy wamr dshawl byda gbry wyth ythy qeylh ythby lmmsry hsbyryn dwd wamr
Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?” Yahweh said, “They will deliver you up.”

וקם דוד וגברוהי כשית מאה גברא ונפקו מקעילה והליכו באתר דכשר להלכא ולשאול אתחוא ארי אשתיזיב דוד מקעילה ואתמנע מלמפק:
mlmpq wathmne mqeylh dwd ashthyzyb ary athkhwa wlshawl lhlka dkshr bathr whlykw mqeylh wnpqw gbra mah kshyth wgbrwhy dwd wqm
Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah and went wherever they could go. Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah; and he gave up going there.

ויתיב דוד במדברא במצדתא ויתיב בטורא במדברא דזיף ובעוהי שאול כל יומיא ולא מסריה יי בידיה:
bydyh yy msryh wla ywmya kl shawl wbewhy dzyp bmdbra bTwra wythyb bmtsdtha bmdbra dwd wythyb
David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God didn’t deliver him into his hand.

וחזא דוד ארי נפק שאול למקטליה ודוד במדברא דזיף בחורשא:
bkhwrsha dzyp bmdbra wdwd lmqTlyh shawl npq ary dwd wkhza
David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph in the woods.
16
וקם יהונתן בר שאול ואזל לות דוד לחורשא ותקיף ית ידיה במימרא דיי:
dyy bmymra ydyh yth wthqyp lkhwrsha dwd lwth wazl shawl br yhwnthn wqm
Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David into the woods, and strengthened his hand in God.

ואמר ליה לא תדחל ארי לא תשכחינך ידא דשאול אבא ואת תמלוך על ישראל ואנא אהי לך לתנין ואף שאול אבא ידע כן:
kn yde aba shawl wap lthnyn lk ahy wana yshral el thmlwk wath aba dshawl yda thshkkhynk la ary thdkhl la lyh wamr
He said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for the hand of Saul my father won’t find you; and you will be king over Israel, and I will be next to you; and Saul my father knows that also.”

וגזרו תרויהון קים קדם יי ויתיב דוד בחורשא ויהונתן אזל לביתיה:
lbythyh azl wyhwnthn bkhwrsha dwd wythyb yy qdm qym thrwyhwn wgzrw
They both made a covenant before Yahweh. Then David stayed in the woods and Jonathan went to his house.
19
וסליקו אנשי זיף לות שאול לגבעתא למימר הלא דוד מטמר עמנא במצדתא בחורשא בגבעת חכילה דמדרום לישימון:
lyshymwn dmdrwm khkylh bgbeth bkhwrsha bmtsdtha emna mTmr dwd hla lmymr lgbetha shawl lwth zyp anshy wslyqw
Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the woods, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert?
20
וכען לכל רעות נפשך מלכא למיחת חות ואנחנא נמסריניה בידא דמלכא:
dmlka byda nmsrynyh wankhna khwth lmykhth mlka npshk rewth lkl wken
Now therefore, O king, come down. According to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part will be to deliver him up into the king’s hand.”

ואמר שאול בריכן אתון קדם יי ארי חסתון עלי:
ely khsthwn ary yy qdm athwn brykn shawl wamr
Saul said, “You are blessed by Yahweh, for you have had compassion on me.
22
אזילו כען אתקינו עוד ודעו וחזו ית אתריה דשרי ביה מן חזהי תמן ארי אמרין לי דערים ונפיק הוא:
hwa wnpyq derym ly amryn ary thmn khzhy mn byh dshry athryh yth wkhzw wdew ewd athqynw ken azylw
Please go make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who has seen him there; for I have been told that he is very cunning.

וחזו ודעו מכל מטמוריתא דאטמר תמן ותתובון לותי בקשוט ואהך עמכון ויהי אם איתוהי בארעא ואבלוש יתיה בכל אלפיא דבית יהודה:
yhwdh dbyth alpya bkl ythyh wablwsh barea aythwhy am wyhy emkwn wahk bqshwT lwthy wththwbwn thmn daTmr mTmwrytha mkl wdew wkhzw
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself; and come again to me with certainty, and I will go with you. It shall happen, if he is in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.”

וקמו ואזלו לזיף קדם שאול ודוד וגברוהי במדברא דמעון במישרא דמדרום לישימון:
lyshymwn dmdrwm bmyshra dmewn bmdbra wgbrwhy wdwd shawl qdm lzyp wazlw wqmw
They arose, and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah on the south of the desert.

ואזל שאול וגברוהי למבעי וחויאו לדוד ונחת לכיפא ויתיב במדברא דמעון ושמע שאול ורדף בתר דוד במדברא דמעון:
dmewn bmdbra dwd bthr wrdp shawl wshme dmewn bmdbra wythyb lkypa wnkhth ldwd wkhwyaw lmbey wgbrwhy shawl wazl
Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told, he went down to the rock, and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. When Saul heard that, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.

ואזל שאול מסטר טורא מכא ודוד וגברוהי מסטר טורא מכא והוה דוד מתבעי למיזל מן קדם שאול ושאול וגברוהי כמנין על דוד ועל גברוהי למחדהון:
lmkhdhwn gbrwhy wel dwd el kmnyn wgbrwhy wshawl shawl qdm mn lmyzl mthbey dwd whwh mka Twra msTr wgbrwhy wdwd mka Twra msTr shawl wazl
Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David hurried to get away for fear of Saul, for Saul and his men surrounded David and his men to take them.
27
ואזגדא אתא לות שאול למימר אוחי ואזל ארי אתנגידו פלשתאי על ארעא:
area el plshthay athngydw ary wazl awkhy lmymr shawl lwth atha wazgda
But a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid on the land!”

ותב שאול מלמרדף בתר דוד ואזל לקדמות פלשתאי על כן קרו לאתרא ההוא כיף פלגותא אתרא דאתפליג ביה לבא דמלכא למיזל לכא ולכא:
wlka lka lmyzl dmlka lba byh dathplyg athra plgwtha kyp hhwa lathra qrw kn el plshthay lqdmwth wazl dwd bthr mlmrdp shawl wthb
So Saul returned from pursuing David, and went against the Philistines. Therefore they called that place Sela Hammahlekoth.
